Odyssey A journey in land
"Odyssey A journey in land " is specifically inspired by the journey driving on I55 between Chicago and Bloomington-Normal Illinois. It is a relatively flat, mundane landscape where nature is put entirely into the service of man. From the farmers fields, to the placement of trees, the suburban and roadside communities. It is a landscape observed entirely while moving at speed.
I began to find beauty in the subtle contrasts between the undulating ground and man-made plots of land, the textures and colors of crops, trees and plant life against the man-made communities, the concrete roads and expanse of sky above.
This body of work is my response to that experience. I have used natural materials like soil, tree bark and branches together with nails, rope, wire and mirrors to explore this universal interaction between man and nature.
